Dose anyone have any horror stories as to the way they were treated by the job after they had been injured on duty.
I was assaulted in 2003 which resulted in my right (dominant hand) being rendered virtually useless, i`m now classed as 60% disabled. After the initial month the job turned the heat on and soon began, what I would call a campaign against me, ignoring letters from the consultants and the dwp, they humiliated me in "welfare" meetings, I was placed on half pay then no pay because I would not return to work, this was on the advice of my medical team. Eventually I was reviewed by an independant doctor and a psychiatrist who both said I was unfit to serve. I was retired last July and still had to fight to get my pay and pension sorted.

Seems to me that your federation haven't done very much to help you out with this one.
How much service did you have. Should'nt make any difference, however may have had something to do with it, if you didnt have much service.

Hi, I had almost 14 years service and was on a specialist team, covert intelligence gathering etc. I agree with your comments about the federation, as the phrase goes "Toothless Tigers". I`m slowly winning the battle.

I was seriously injured as a result of an assault. My lower back was damaged and the condition worsened to the extent that I required a metal cage to be placed around the vertebrae.
As a result of this I was off work for a considerable time. After 6 months I was reduced to half pay, apparently I was supposed to have been given the chance to put forward an argument to continue on full pay but the Chief Inspector "mislaid" the paperwork.
The police fed didn't really want to know, just put me in touch with their insurers who made my pay up.
Retired in 2000, glad I am out of it now, my son has 5 years in and is seriously thinking of packing it in, the job is now unworkable.

I was subjected to a legally unprecedented judicial process as a serving police officer in in 1997. I was sent to violent incident in the Burley area of Leeds where I was savagely attacked by a known offender resulting in a broken tooth, a damaged eye socket and several other injuries to my head and face. He held me by by shirt during the assault so I couldn't get away.
I used force to defend myself and the man was arrested. He was completely uninjured and I was off work for several weeks with my injuries. I was awarded compensation and he was convicted of assaulting me.
Two years later, I was charged with common assault for the force I'd used on him to defend myself. Despite the circumstances and my exemplary police record, I was convicted and sent to prison. I started the sentence at HMP Armley, one of the toughest prisons in the UK. I was still a serving officer.

It still petrifies and sickens me to read about your story, when's the book out?
It's cases like this that have made me decide to leave the job and emigrate.
'but for the grace of God etc...'
I've used force often when in similar situations, I was a firearms officer for some time and the training for that really helps with your use of force legislation.
You said you were prosecuted 2 years ofter the incident, isnt there a 6 month time limit on Common Assault?
I really think you or someone on your behalf should appeal the conviction then sue the backside off the force who prosecuted you. Shame it's so bloody expensive. _________________ Sometimes there's justice.....sometimes there's just us.

Thanks for your message of support. The book is out next summer (2008) and I'm hoping that this shall do as much for my plight as an appeal. Common assault is only timed out after six months if it's the main charge. If it's an alternative, it can be introduced any time, as was the case in my crown court trial.
I haven't ruled an appeal out.
Thanks again and good luck with your career.
